Cataract Chronicles-25 years

As I celebrate my 25th year volunteering as an eye surgeon in Southeast Asia. I am delighted to share photos and stories about the vision challenges and the people and cultures of India, Nepal, Cambodia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Vietnam.  - Dr. Gary Barth

Chronicle 16 - Transportation:  Conquering the Biggest Patient Cost for Free Surgery

This photo, taken by my colleague, Bob Anderson, MD, shows Indian village members returning to their homes after a coordinated mini-camp for cataract surgery.

PRASAD staffer Gurunath, who spoke the local dialect, made house-to-house rounds on his motorized trail bike, searching out the blind.

When an eye camp became available, he shepherded these villagers to a PRASAD van to make it easier and less expensive to come in for surgery.

Grouping villagers known to each other in one van allowed those who needed surgery to get transportation without the added expense of accompanying family members.
